If you are so bold as to determine to follow Christ Jesus, I mean really follow as His Disciple, you will find that at times you will be walking a very narrow path with few footprints in the way to follow. The Lord is always with you on your journey, but you will find only a few companions walking with you. Many may start with you down that road, but few will persevere, will you persevere? I have started this road several times and then found that I have turned onto the highway of selfishness and pride, when the 18 wheeler of the Holy Spirit honked His horn, I realized what I had done, then I was able to turn once again to the narrow path. Your life has to be set apart from this world, if we are to claim citizenship in the Kingdom of God. Too many are claiming to be Christians, and too few are bearing the fruit of it.
It is a fact that we have changed the truth of God into a lie in many ways to satisfy our laziness and selfish desires. We have watered down the gospel, focused on the temporary life, and made the word of God into a book on positive thinking, just a tool to make me into a dynamo of temporary wealth and health, only to find that I have allowed myself to be spiritually poor in understanding and in deed, focusing more on my desires than on my brothers and sisters needs.
We have hundreds of doctrines to believe, not many have a balance of true righteousness.
Some have Christ as weak, God as a senile old grandfather, and the Holy Spirit as the miraculous gift-giver for the asking, notwithstanding the spiritual state of the one asking. Others have Jesus as one who partitions out salvation to just a few specially chosen ones, God is so tyrannical and demanding that Jesus must stop his hand from just destroying us all at the slightest offence, and the Holy Spirit, a gopher for Christ to go pick out the one that is ready for Him to save. Still others, I'm not exactly sure what they believe, and I don't think they really know either, just take every wind of doctrine that comes along and make a cocktail.
The truth is, that we all have the ability to receive salvation, even Hitler had the ability to accept Christ's sacrificial payment upon the cross of death at Calvary, and the Holy Spirit convicts every heart the gospel is preached to. That person must either accept that He/she has sinned against a pure and Holy God and be sorrowful enough to turn away from that life into the life of Christ Jesus, accepting the Holy Spirit as a comforter and guide. Then after the salvation of the person , they are to be baptized in water signifying the death and resurrection of their life in Christ, old things passed away and all things new. Then the person should earnestly seek the baptism of fire that allows us to live in true brokenness and purity before the Lord, walking in His power and strength, giving us understanding as we feed our Spirit and renew our mind through reading the scriptures of the Holy Bible. We must pray, and at times fast to keep our bodies under subjection to our Spirit and not become a lazy and glutenous follower, not able to produce much fruit for the Kingdom. It is not always and easy walk nor found there many short-cuts, but in the end we shall reach the promised land, as the children of Israel wandered 40 years to reach the promised home, so are we changed during our journey, to learn obedience and sacrifice for His cause. We need only to stay on course, keep our lives pure and look toward the higher calling of our Lord, love one another, forgive and insist on holiness for your standard.
