We have many gods today, our affections are divided among many things in the modern world. There is entertainment beyond our wildest imaginations, special effects that are unprecedented in the history of the world. Communication is almost instantaneous among affluent Countries. But, along with this sense of control, there is a great deception. Many begin to think they understand the way to control their paths and lives, needing only more information with which to make the appropriate decision. Consider the following verses from Acts, chapter 17:
24 God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. 25 Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things. 26 And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, 27 so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; 28 for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’
There is not even a thought given to a relevant God, one that still controls the world and all it's processes, the thoughts often run along the following: "Isn't our prosperity and wealth proof that we are on the right track, no time to dream about such ethereal and make-believe stuff like the tooth fairy and God. That doesn't help me in this life one bit, I'll worry about that when it gets close to my time. Of course, this is a foolish delusion, one in which no thought of eternity is entertained. The bible tells us that the fool says in his heart there is no God. But, for many "professing Christians", allowing their seed to become choked out by the thorny vines of the world is our greatest potential disaster. Lives of dependency, entangled in worldly addictions and entrapments. There is but one remedy, stop investing our heart in the world and start investing in the substance of the Spirit. The true world of eternal life, not a temporary substitute. I would like to leave you with this excerpt again from the Large Catechism of Martin Luther, taken from Project Wittenburg, may your life be prosperous in Christ Jesus our Lord, honor the Father, allow the Holy Spirit to be your comforter and guide.
Who is Really Your God?:
An Excerpt From Martin Luther's LARGE CATECHISM
Translation by Rev. Robert E. Smith
From the German text in: TRIGLOT CONCORDIA.
(St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1921). p. 580.
The First Commandment
You must not have other gods.
That is, I must be your only God.
Question: What does this saying mean? How should we understand
it? What does it mean to have a god? What is God?
Answer: To have a god means this: You expect to receive all good
things from it and turn to it in every time of trouble. Yes, to
have a god means to trust and to believe in Him with your whole
heart. I have often said that only the trust and faith of the
heart can make God or an idol. If your faith and trust are true,
you have the true God, too. On the other hand, where trust is
false, is evil, there you will not have the true God either. Faith
and God live together. I tell you, whatever you set your heart on
and rely on is really your god.
