There was a movie out several years ago, the name was ,"Mr. Holland's Opus". The movie was about a very talented musical composer that took a job as a music teacher at a High School to make ends meet. He stayed many years until the budgets no longer would support a music department. He found early on, that He was just doing his job with no real care or effort for the students, oh, he did his job, but that was about all. He, of course, was not reaching the students and had a very bad lack of interest. His Principal challenged him one day by saying that what He lacked was a compass, He had nothing to guide Him, no conviction to reach each child no matter what. I believe what the many if not most of the Christians in America are missing is a moral compass, a faith that will lead us to do the Father's will no matter the circumstances. A direction of morality that says that God's way of living is the best direction for us to live our lives, it doesn't matter what we say, it's what we do. No wonder people scoff at Christians and reject Christianity, we've made it everything it is not. We've made it an just an emotional experience, or just a moral code, or maybe even a social club. We've allowed Christianity to be reduced to a comfort of believing in something, not really putting forth the effort for truth, but just sort of moving in the general direction of God. God is not in a general direction, He is a specific destination. The scriptures tell us in John 14:6," Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." There is a period at the end, it's in every version I've looked at so far. That period means that statement is finished, just as the work of Christ's atonement is finished and we should be accepting it and acting like it. We are calling ourselves disciples, yet doing things that please ourselves, going the direction not called for, getting lost in the jungle. We can't go our own way and arrive at the destination we seek. We must follow the blueprint of the word of God, the Holy Scriptures, these words give our lives direction and hope, just as the first explorers made maps to help guide the settlers that followed, those settlers had hope in the fact that someone had been before them and had blazed a trail and made the map, we, too have one who has gone before us and blazed a trail for us to follow, His name is Jesus, and He sent back a comforter to help us in our journey. Consider these scriptures today and find you moral compass:
Psalm 119:105- "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
John 14:3- " And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also."
Romans 8- "37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
